With social media, misinformation has the opportunity to spread quicker and farther than ever before. While there are ways to educate oneself and gain a better understanding of media literacy, misinformation learns to spread in new ways. One of the most recent issues regarding misinformation is the increased use and consumption of AI, or artificial intelligence. AI can sculpt images and videos that look and feel real, making it harder for people to distinguish fact from fiction. This blurs the line between what’s authentic and what’s fabricated, increasing the risk of manipulation and misunderstanding.

“How and why does misinformation spread?” explains it perfectly. “…exposure to misinformation increases the odds that people will believe it, which in turn increases the odds that they will spread it.” Hearing something that people align with is one likely factor as to why misinformation can unknowingly spread. When someone hears what they want to, they are more likely to want to believe it. Another key factor that relates to this is circular reporting. Circular reporting is a disinformation phenomenon where a piece of information appears to come from multiple independent sources, but actually originates from a single, often unverified or false source. This occurs oftentimes due to the validation that people receive when they hear other people repeating the same “facts” that they are.

This video explains how circular reporting can spread and talks about very real instances of this, such as the 1998 publication of a paper that claimed a routine vaccination of children causes autism, creating a movement for parents to not vaccinate their children. This paper has been discredited, but the movement and idea still stands today.

There are all kinds of different types of misinformation on social media:

False information

Misleading content

Manipulated content

Account imposters

Satire/Parodies

Conspiracy Theories

Clickbait

Propaganda

Deepfakes

The list truly does go on.

As of recently, AI is one of the most concerning drivers of misinformation on social media due to its ability to generate, spread, and amplify false or misleading content at an unprecedented scale, speed, and level of sophistication than before.

The Misinformation Accelerator explains that AI is now being used in research articles and propaganda campaigns. According to a report released by the European Union in March 2025, 27% of global attempts by foreign powers to manipulate information in 2025 involved AI, nearly three times the rise from the previous year. Chatbots, such as ChatGBT creates fake content that makes it difficult for people to recognize the validity of what they are seeing. This makes it much easier to spread misinformation because people see an image or video and do not think twice about if it is real or not. The article mentions, “Already AI can generate text so convincing that participants in some experiments rate it as more humanlike than text actually written by humans, allowing bad actors to target well-crafted messages to specific audiences or even individuals, and engage them in realistic conversations.” This is also true for images and videos.

I personally conducted a small study with family and friends to test out how well they can spot AI images versus fake ones. I had them go to this website and take the short 10-question quiz and send me their results. Try it out for yourself and you will probably be surprised at how difficult some of them are!

Which Image is AI

I also took the quiz and found that this specific question with the two dogs was the most surprising to me. I originally thought that the dog on the right was the AI image because of the background and the way the dog seemed “too perfect.” However, that was the real image. Quizzes like these can be fun and help with discernment, but they are also a reality check. The average score from my friends/family was a 7/10. While this doesn’t seem terrible, imagine that three out of ten images or videos you see online is not real- and you had no idea. Now, imagine you had other people or accounts that also believed that content was real and it goes viral. The content and news surrounding it may spread like wildfire, also spreading misinformation along with it. This is what commonly happens in our current society.

A recent example I discovered on RumorGuard was about a video where a tiger had escaped its enclosure. You can view the video on Instagram here. In the video, it shows a woman cleaning the floors when the doors to the cages all open up, and she runs away as the tiger starts to walk out. While many people might see the setting of the video and realize it is AI, others did not.

RumorGuard explains it well. The video produces a strong reaction, which will get people to stay and engage with the video. The video has some mishaps, with the hose separating and the tiger moving in an unnatural way. AI has already come a long way. When seeing a video like this, we have to ask questions. How could the cages have opened up with no security measures? Doesn’t the room look too strange to be in a zoo? Why were there no other animals in the other cages? By doing this, we can protect ourselves from fake news and stories such as this one.

This TODAY videos does well in explaining how to better spot an AI video. It mentions many of them have a certain, “eeriness.” One of the speakers in the video made an unfortunate, but true point. “You will be fooled by an AI photo this week, and you probably already have been and you didn’t know it.”

Niko Pueringer from Corridor Digital teaches the hosts some techniques to spotting AI-generated content. By observing:

The length of a video- AI content takes a lot of computing resources, so most videos are only a few seconds long

The background- Are there people or things that don’t make sense (ex: people disappearing, going the wrong way)

Architecture (ex: walls or windows with nothing behind them)

Quality- A lot of AI content looks or sounds too perfect

SKEPTICISM– Using common sense and looking for the context of a video (ex: Is it trying to get money, create emotion, what is the source)

you can learn how to catch an AI video before it tricks you.

Nick Pueringer is part of a YouTube channel that has a lot of AI-related videos called Corridor Crew.

Let’s do another kind of quiz. Here is the link to a quiz about spotting AI-generated writing versus human writing. With AI videos, there is usually some “evidence” as to whether it is real or not. Writing is a whole different category. How to spot when writing is AI: The 6 elements of robot style distinguishes the differences between human versus robot writing. According to the article, AI writing usually includes:

Excessive use of emdashes (ex: “She opened the ancient book—its pages brittle and yellowed—and discovered a map that would change her life forever.”)

Forced sass (ex: “But here’s the thing…”)

Cliche phrases (ex: “As the world continues to evolve…”)

AI Buzzwords:

(The University of Helsinki conducted a study in April 2025 to find which words increased in use after ChatGBT.)

Overall, AI facilitates the pre-existing issue of misinformation and how easily it circulates. By educating oneself on tactics to spot AI-generated content, we can become a more media and AI literate society that prioritizes real facts over fake news. It is more important than ever to check sources, look for inconsistencies, analyze visuals, and remain skeptical to any content that may pose red flags. This awareness will promote a future where people can stay informed, and can navigate the digital world that is better and safer than today.

Misinformation is false or inaccurate information spread through different means.
